First 3 years of free weekly mp3s: fave ambientish drifters
Unsurprisingly most of this stuff is pretty scarce on Youtube etc, but have provided streamers where I could...
Sonmi451 - Vladivostok
Clear and crisp electronic ambience with occasional bass notes, obscured spoken-word vocals and pads that rise and fall. A more-than-passing resemblance to old Monolake ambient material such as 'Gobi The Desert'.
Unit 21 - September, 10th
Has a techno pulse running through it, but I definitely think of this as best for spacing out to. Crackling textures and an almost machine-like bassline are nicely offset by spooky flutes.
Daniel Maze - How's The Serenity?
Tape-based ambience - the grit and lurching tape manipulations undercut the potentially naff combination of folky-sounding flutes, acoustic guitar and rain stick. Boards-ish synth arpeggios and more flutes make for a great second half. I had to include this because it's really distinctive, as well as good.
Alonefold - Weather Station Radar
The most recent posting that I've included in my faves... Good murky, musty track with persistent reversed sounds adding a slight edge to the heavy drones. Not sure quite why I've found this such a good listen during the summer months, but it's been working well for me.
