Weekly mp3 #100: Signer - +Kicks and Kicks

Promo pic of Bevan Smith, aka Signer

A Low Hum has this and another track from the same album up for download.

Deep, swung synth wobble, with short phrases of falsetto vocals. Jangling guitar and fairly unintelligible sung harmonies swamp the synth-lurch about halfway through. It's another cheery, summery soup. Distinctions between dance music and/or indie rock broken down pretty thoroughly...

New Plymouth-born Bevan Smith has released stuff as Signer and Aspen as well as being part of Skallander, Over The Atlantic and Patio. (The last one being with me.) He set up a label called Involve Records in the late 90s and released two of my Jet Jaguar CDs as well as our Patio album, but we're not much in touch.

More than most bedroom producer types from NZ, Bevan's actually got off his arse and pushed what he's doing overseas. This track is released in NZ via A Low Hum, but as with the other Signer records it's also coming out in the States via Carpark Records (who release hip bods like Dan Deacon, and Toro Y Moi who I mentioned a few weeks back). One of his (folky) Skallander records was put out by equally hip British label Type.
