Weekly mp3 #112: Asura - Manzanita

Ryan York, with hedge

Get it on the Non Projects label site.

Submerged Beach Boys vox and a bit of clean electric guitar serves an intro.  Then stuff goes suddenly kind of like Boards of Canada with a bright synth bass part, unintelligible spoken word stuff and a glokky beat. Glokky! The guitars and sung vox come back in as synth arpeggios stagger and stutter about it.

There's actual verse and chorus action, and - shit - a solo!

OK, admittedly it's a scrapey sounding cello solo, but still, it's a surprisingly traditional song format for the kind of track many others would just let ride out without any big changes.

Apparently there's more than one Asura, which is unfortunate for this young Californian producer, Ryan York.  The angry comments on iTunes from people who bought the album thinking they were getting something by another Asura are a bit of a giggle. Unmusical! Distracting noise! The other Asura is so well known the name double-up must be intentional! Hmm.

(If you like this track, the album is great, BTW.)

Mmm the Boards of Canada ref is spot on. It's nice, altho I think I've got enough of that style for the moment (maybe I've got the other Asura?!). I had a couple of samplers, one was 'irritating music for discerning snobs to impress their jaded friends', which aside from being a stunning album title, had a lot of this style on it.See, more evidence I do read your blog ;)
