Weekly mp3 #116: Spirituals - Wanderings

Get. From. Pitchfork.
Pitchfork get some mileage out of the idea this track is assembled from free jazz samples, but the original material is sliced sufficiently finely that it could have come from anywhere and the results are really accessible.
It kicks off with acoustic guitar arpeggios that then go all Tangerine Dream synth. To make things disorienting, a fairly heavy beat drops in playing 3s against 4s, but then goes all double-time stepper on everyone. Sliced descending melodies and more guitar bits trade off against each other.
The general vibe is a lot like Four Tet's recent stuff, really.
Lo, Spirituals is one guy from the US. I haven't liked the other tracks I've heard from his forthcoming debut as much as this one.
2010 seems to be the year of the solitary white guy on this blog - and the next few months there's not much variation in that regard. Oh well, hopefully the music itself is varied enough. As always I try to let stuff sit a while before considering writing about it here.
