Weekly mp3 #119: Ghostpoet - Morning feat. Micachu

I was going to link you to the track that opens with the shout out "Hold tight engineer Rock'n'Roll Elf!" but decided to opt for the weird one instead. ;) Ghostpoet raps super-lazily about waking up feeling munted over a super-murky backing track that alternates between a chorus with Micachu singing over a new wavey guitar lick and verses with weird gloopy percussion.
This track reminded me most of Tricky circa his first album, 'Maxinquaye'. It's an English guy rapping over beats, woman singing the hook, both very English sounding, a scruffiness to it, and despite the elements the overall result doesn't really add up to hip-hop. Circa 'Maxinquaye' cos it sounds like they actually enjoyed making it and aren't being all self-consciously zany, which is how I'd stereotype Tricky's career since. To be clear, if Ghostpoet had never listened to Tricky at all I wouldn't be surprised, there are just interesting parallels.
Ghostpoet is a London MC by the name of Obaro Ejimiwe. I'm surprised he's signed to Giles Peterson's label, because I think he's interesting. Ghostpoet, that is. :P
Micachu is a singer/producer/guitarist/all kinds of things, also from the UK. She's been hyped plenty, so maybe you've heard of her.
